President delivers an update on safety to the York community

President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri has issued this message to the York community:

With our winter term concluding in a few short weeks, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you an update on the progress we are making on implementing the METRAC (Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children) Safety Audit report.

I would first like to thank Professor Pat Bradshaw for her role as inaugural chair of the Community Safety Council (CSC). As chair, she was responsible for bringing together multiple stakeholders to look at the safety trends and issues emerging in the communities. Unfortunately for York, she has accepted a post as dean at the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University effective June 1. Pat is an incredible leader and I wish her well in her future endeavours.

A day of new experiences for York’s president(s)

For third-year student Rabia Sajun, it was the pace that surprised her the most as she swapped roles with President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri Feb. 28 in York’s inaugural President for a Day contest.

“I hadn’t anticipated just how fast it all is and how you are literally running from one place to another, always a little bit late, but trying to make the most of every minute,” she said.

Statement from the President on Arrest of Suspect – Assiniboine Rd.

February 23, 2012

This morning, Toronto Police Service and York University held a joint news conference to announce the arrest of Andrew Macdonald, the alleged suspect in the shot fired at York’s Assiniboine student apartment building on Saturday, February 18, 2012.

I would like to express my deep concern that the alleged suspect, a York student, so seriously compromised the safety of everyone at York. I am extremely thankful that no one was physically hurt and that an arrest has been made.

Update on the Assiniboine Rd. gun incident

York University has been informed today by Toronto Police Service that an arrest has been made in the investigation of the discharge of a firearm at 360 Assiniboine Rd. on Saturday morning. We are gratified that the university’s close working relationship with police has led to an arrest in the case. Police will schedule a news conference to update the community.

Rabia Sajun wins President for a Day contest

After weeks of amusing promotions, witty tweets and a funny video starring York President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, the inaugural President for a Day contest is now closed and a winner has been selected. On Feb. 28, Rabia Sajun, a third-year biochemistry and education student, will become York University’s President for a Day.

“I would like to congratulate Rabia on her winning submission,” said Shoukri. “I am proud of all of our students and she certainly is no exception. As a student in our accelerated program, she has truly embraced the York culture and spirit.”
